With the March 3k on the Green having been rescheduled from the last Friday in March, Good Friday, to the first Friday in April, there were some concerns that runners may have thought that they would fall foul of an April Fool’s prank. However, this was not the case and some 79 runners braved the April showers and helped raise £158 for Hospice UK.
Bellahouston Harrier’s teenager Jack Heathwood led from the Start but lost out to Giffnock North’s Chris Greenhaugh in the end. The 40+ year old used all of his experience to snatch victory from the 16 year old in a photo finish. Both athletes clocked 9:31, with Chris recording his sixth race win of the year.
There was also a fight to the finish for third spot, with Craig Lamont(9:49) just out racing his fellow Bellahouston Harriers’ Ian Sim (9:50) and Brian Douglas (9:51) as well as unattached Iain Carroll (9:50).
We’re taking steps to try to increase the number of female participants at the best wee race in Scotland and were rewarded with a field of nineteen women runners on Friday. Hopefully they’ll all come back and spread the word to their friends, colleagues and running buddies too.
Bellahouston Harrier, Bernie O’neill’s time of 11:46 was good enough to see her win the Women’s Race by over thirty seconds, from Faith Hodgins and Lesley McArdle who both crossed the line in 12:21. The Glasgow Dental Hospital & School runner just managing to hold off a strong finish from her unattached rival.

The April 3k on the Green will be held, as usual, on the last Friday of the month the 29th April. We hope to see you there.
