The bad weather kept a few regulars away from the Great Run Local’s Glasgow Quay events on Wed 18th November but that didn’t impact on the quality of the races.
Some 23 runners battled it out against the wind, the rain and tricky underfoot conditions. Although the elements resulted in slower than usual times, they did little to lessen the fierce competition throughout the field. Up front, Irvine’s Paul Lafferty hopes of success, were scuppered by the arrival of a brace of Bellahouston Harriers, in the form of Darren McQuade and Robbie Ferguson. Whilst Robbie, making his Broomilaw debute, was perhaps a bit of an unknown quantity, Darren was quite the opposite, having won six of his eight outings and placing runner up in the other two.
Darren led the race from the ‘off’ with his clubmate tucked in behind, with Paul trying hard to keep up with the two speed merchants and so it continued until the Finish Line, with Darren crossing the line in 18:22, Robbie in 18:25 and Paul in 19:44.
In the Women’s Race, it was Margaret Hutchinson, participating in the event for the seventh time, who took an early lead. However her focus was on her friendly rivalry with Mark Garton. Whilst there was little between the two in the first half of the race, Mags stepped up her pace in the last 2.5k, focussing on reaching the Finish Line ahead of her foe, she crossed the line in 24:26, some 49 seconds in front of Mark. With Claire Doyle runner up in 26:05 and Celia Thompson third in 29:48.
Not only had Mags beat her rival by a good bit but she had also won the Women’s Race, the first time that she has ever one a race. It’s no wonder that she was happy!
